"I truly had a blast during the 4-week course! There was a good, solid mix of in-class instruction, preparing for lessons, actual teaching, discussion, and of course FUN! I met wonderful people. Although the course was intense, the laid-back atmosphere provided a relaxed, enjoyable environment in which to learn. I don't really want to leave! Having the job placement already arranged was great. This meant we could relax and unwind for a week before we went to Bangkok" - Jenn Hand, USA

2. Foreign Language Experience

You will receive some Thai language training to let you experience what it's like being a language student, and how this might direct your own teaching. This will also equip you with enough Thai to get by each day living in Thailand.

This section of the course will also help to prepare you for life in a foreign culture. It also assists you by allowing them to experience the problems your future students will encounter. This compulsory section of the course enables you to obtain a Teacher Permit from the Ministry of Education.

3. Teaching Practice

The most fundamental area of any TEFL/TESOL course and the main reason why other TEFL programs do not measure up.

You will teach real students of English and put into practice the skills learnt on the course. You will conduct up to 6 hours of teaching practice covering elementary to advanced level students as well as one-to-one tutoring. You will also observe around 2-3 hours studying other teachers in action. Course trainers will guide you through the process of planning, preparation, delivery and reflection, and will provide you with constructive feedback on your performance.

4. Language Awareness

Even native speakers of English will surely have forgotten the grammar they learned at school. You will learn how to answer any questions or situations that may arise in a class.

a) Grammar. Covers word classes, simple sentence elements, complex sentences and clauses, verb time and tense, aspect and conditionals and modals, phrasal's and voice.

b) Phonology. Covers phonemics, word stress and intonation, sentence stress and intonation, rhythm and intonation, and connected speech.

5. Student Profile

Trainees work with individual students on rapport-building, error analysis and correction and addressing individual student needs. Three meetings with the student are required including transcription and error analysis of audio and written samples, culminating in a 60-minute session observed by a trainer.

6. Examination/Presentation

Trainees sit a written examination and make a presentation of a prepared class. Many other courses will limit your observed classes due to the large number of trainees they take on. Having so many trainees and so few students it is physically impossible for all their trainees to receive 6 hours. With a maximum of 12 trainees in our courses, you will have plenty time to prepare for the practicalities of the classroom and allow you to overcome those first-time 'nerves' in a controlled environment with the professional support of your tutor.

Your Trainers

Our trainers are highly qualified and very experienced in teacher training and language training. They are all full-time employees and most have been with us for several years. Being fully trained professionals with many years experience of EFL classroom teaching, our trainers are both authoritative and informed. The training procedure for our trainers is extremely rigorous. Not only are the trainers expected to have post-Diploma teaching experience, they are also required to have related industry experience.

Our highly skilled trainers have a wealth of experience between them and provide a superior academic and practical course that is unparalleled anywhere else in Thailand. Each of the trainers on the course has been involved in teaching and teacher training for many years. They are all active teachers and well aware of the classroom situations facing English teachers today. Each group of trainees will have input from up to four trainers during the course. The training is split between Thai instruction, English grammar and usage, and teacher training/methodology.

Your teacher trainer brings with him more than a decade of experience from Japan, where he was teacher trainer for an international language school chain. Still an active teacher, he has taught in Thailand at Dulwich International College and Prince of Songkhla University. Your Thai instructor has many years of experience in teaching the language, being a Thai language instructor in a busy language school when not conducting Thai classes for TEFL trainees.

Your English trainer was also a long-term teacher of English in Japan prior to relocating to Thailand. Being a teacher himself, he is aware of the problem areas that new trainees will encounter and has the experience to get you through them. Your supervising teachers in the Teaching Practice sessions are all past graduates of the TEFL course. They each understand the challenges you are facing on the course and are there with helpful advice and support as needed. Above all, it is the personal commitment that our trainers bring to the course that make them stand out.

What Is TEFL/CELTA/TESOL?

TEFL = Teaching English as a Foreign Language - Is the name of the industry which encompass two major certificates, the Cambridge CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults) and the Trinity College CertTESOL or equivalent. An internationally recognised TEFL course must include at least 6 hours of observed teaching practice and 100 hours classroom time.

TESOL = Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages - A more modern term which encompasses both TEFL & TESL. All of the above are used interchangeably in practice worldwide, they all mean virtually the same. This term refers to the certificate you will receive on most TEFL courses which focuses on a more practical communicative approach to teaching.

CELTA = Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults - A more in-depth and very intensive TESOL course where the qualification awarded by Cambridge ESOL, part of the University of Cambridge. Very heavy on Grammar, theory & linguistics.
